Crofton Construction Services completed a design-build project to kick-off the modernization of an aged barge loading system and pier in significant disrepair in West Point, VA. This entailed a full and partial demolition of existing structures, which required significant strategic planning. Other phases included installation of sheet pile cofferdams, refurbishment and installation of new mooring dolphins, tower erection, bank stabilization with rip rap and storm water discharge system, and the installation of a 350’ catwalk pier. A new control tower was also installed with a smart winch system, which was the first step in making it a fully integrated smart facility. Clay Backus, Project Manager, shared that having heavy lift resources from Crofton’s crane rental division proved to be a major advantage and that he relied heavily on his colleague Garfield Boyd’s expertise for coordinating. Crofton’s Tim Harris assisted with the permitting process and collaboration with agencies such the Army Corps of Engineers, Virginia DEQ, and the town of West Point during the permitting process. The facility remained operational during improvements, so crews stayed flexible and worked around the loading schedule. These improvements added to the overall efficiency of the facility by increasing the rate of loading and the size of the barge it can accommodate.
